Federation of Abbey Schools

Welcome to the Federation of Abbey Schools Academy Trust’s Governing Body.

The Federation of Abbey Schools became an Academy on the 1st August 2011. This means that we are an Academy Trust and a registered charitable company limited by a guarantee. Academy Governors are therefore subject to the duties and responsibilities of charitable trustees and those of Company Directors. Members of the Academy Trust signed a Memorandum of Association forming the Company.

We are a Multi Academy Trust, as we have both an Infants and Juniors, however we are termed as a ‘Hard Federation’ which means the Academy Trust and Governors are responsible for both.

Our Governing Body

Our Governors have been appointed as Directors of the company and as an Academy we have entered into a Funding Agreement with the Education Funding Agency. The Governors are responsible for the proper stewardship of these funds and to ensure economy, efficiency and effectiveness in their use. We also have our own Articles of Association which set out the regulations for the company’s operations.

The Governing Body is made up of 15 Governors drawn from staff, parents within the school and members of our wider community. (Please see current Governing Body Membership below) The usual terms of office is 4 years, although in accordance with the Articles any Governor can be re-appointed or re-elected.

The Governing Body meets as a whole group twice a term and has three sub-committees which are as follows: -

Leadership & Management

Finance (including Pay Review Sub Committee)

Teaching & Learning

Please click on the following link to access the sub-committees’ terms of reference. (Click here to view Sub Committees terms of reference)

A copy of the Minutes can be accessed below and we are currently adding the minutes from the 2017/18 Academic Year as they are approved and become available. (Please see Minutes below)  A hard copy of all previous Minutes can also be accessed in the school offices.

The Key Roles and Responsibilities

The key role of the Governing Body is to help the school provide the best possible education for our pupils.  We play a critical role in guiding, supporting and challenging our school.

Our three guiding principles are to:-

  •  Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  •  Hold Head Teachers to account for the educational performance of the school and pupils and the performance management of staff; and
  •  Oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure it is money well spent.

There are a number of policies and other documents which the Governing Body is required to hold by law and these can be found in the policy section of this website.  (Click here to visit the policies)
